CAIR-Chicago Attends the 2006 Community Organizing Awards Reception

CAIR-Chicago Governmental Relations Coordinator Sadiya Ahmed attended the 2006 Community Organizing Awards reception hosted at the School of the Art Institute on Tuesday, May 23, 2006. The 2006 recipient of the Chicago Community Trust Collaboration Award was the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR), of which CAIR-Chicago is a member. The coalition received the award for its voter mobilization efforts during the 2004 elections. CAIR-Chicago, as a member organization worked during the 2004 election cycle with ICIRR to organize and mobilize voters in the Orland Park area.

ICIRR announced that the $50,000 grant would be used for the 2006 project, the New American Democracy Project, a collaborative that CAIR-Chicago will work closely with ICIRR and other member organizations. The award would be used to fund 15 fellows who will organize communities in each of the congressional districts in northern Illinois from July 1 to December 1. The project will turn permanent residents into citizens and eligible citizens into frequent voters.
