Why CAIR Supports the Employee Free Choice Act
CAIR-Chicago
May 20, 2009
CAIR chapters nationwide are partnering with Interfaith Worker Justice to rally support for the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) drafted by the 109th Congress.
The Employee Free Choice Act strengthens protections that give workers the freedom to join unions of their choice. This is guaranteed by the US Constitution, the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) and international human rights agreements. However, employees continue to face routine intimidation and harassment when trying to exercise this right.
The Employee Free Choice Act:
• Secures employees’ ability to freely decide whether to join or create a union.
• Provides fair mediation and arbitration during first contract (the initial bargaining phase between the employer and union) disputes between unions and employers.
• Establishes stronger penalties for employers who violate employee rights to form or associate with unions.
