CAIR-Chicago calls on Supreme Court to Strike Down Muslim Ban

Press Conference held on eve of Trump v. Hawaii Hearing

(Chicago, IL 4/23/2018) – The Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations Chicago Chapter (CAIR-Chicago), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today announced a press conference scheduled for Tuesday, April 24th, 2018 at 10:00 AM in anticipation of the Supreme Court hearing of Trump v. Hawaii.

The case tackles the highly contested 3rd Muslim Ban enacted under the Trump Administration. The ban moved to prevent citizens from 5 overwhelmingly Muslim countries (Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, and Chad) plus North Korea, and Venezuela from entering the United States.

Judge Derrick Watson, who blocked the ban in October 2017 and earlier in March 2017, argued that the ban aimed to discriminate against Muslims and thus violates the First Amendment.

CAIR-Chicago has seen a steady wave of travelers affected by the Muslim Ban. Both the online Travel Assistance Project’s portal (tapus.org) and its 24-hour hotline saw high volumes of concerned and affected travelers—and their families—seek assistance against Muslim Ban related issues, including detention and refusal of entry into the U.S.
