PRESS RELEASE: CAIR-Chicago Welcomes Removal of Judge Over Racist ‘Middle Eastern Men’ Remarks, Improper Conduct

[Chicago, IL, 06/30/2023] - The Chicago chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Chicago), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the removal from judicial duties of Cook County Judge William Hooks over his alleged racist remarks about Middle Eastern men during a January meeting and his subsequent improper contact with prosecutors.

Hooks reportedly states, “Middle Eastern men are also controlling and abusive,” in the January meeting. Hooks allegedly said, “I would shoot and kill men like that from Middle Eastern countries.”

"The role of a judge demands the highest level of impartiality and fairness," said Ahmed Rehab, Executive Director of CAIR-Chicago. "Judge Hooks' racist remarks and improper conduct are not only deeply troubling but also undermine the trust and confidence that the public places in the judiciary. We urge the appropriate authorities to thoroughly investigate these allegations and take appropriate action."

CAIR-Chicago stands ready to support the affected community members and work towards ensuring that the justice system upholds the principles of fairness, equality, and justice for all.
