NBC: Nearly 200% Increase in Hate Crimes, CAIR-Chicago Responds to Alderman's "Irresponsible" Tweet

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Chicago called the post “irresponsible and tone-deaf,” expressing concern that rhetoric like this can lead to an increase in hate crimes targeting both Muslim and Jewish communities. The group noted a nearly 200% rise in incidents since October 2023.

Maggie Slavin, CAIR-Chicago Operations Manager said, "This is one of the more heinous things that we've seen and one of the most insensitive things we've seen from an elected representative. It's also just incredibly irresponsible and unserious behavior, dangerous actually."

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Chicago), a civil rights and advocacy group, expressed concern for the safety of Muslim constituents, especially as hate crimes have increased dramatically over the past year.
