CAIR-Chicago Seeks County Clerk’s Apology for

Islamophobic Facebook Post

(Chicago, IL, 1/24/19) - The Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Chicago) today called on the Sangamon County Clerk's Office in Springfield, Ill., to apologize for an Islamophobic statement posted on its official Facebook account.

Sangamon County Clerk Paul Palazzolo's official Facebook page featured an alleged quote by Michele Bachmann, who ran for president in 2012. The quote reads: "The movement of Muslims into Europe and the U.S. is a planned invasion for the specific purpose of destroying Western Christendom." Palazzolo claims the post was the work of a hacker.

"By posting such a bigoted comment on an official site, members of the public may get the impression that those sentiments are a reflection of the county’s views, and not merely a statement of one individual’s Islamophobia," said CAIR-Chicago Communications Coordinator Saadia Pervaiz. "We urge those responsible to apologize and for county officials to publicly repudiate bigotry of all kinds.”

CAIR-Chicago is the Chicago office of America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Our mission is to defend civil rights, fight bigotry, and promote tolerance.
