CAIR-Chicago Celebrates Prison Case Win

It' been a battle 5 years in the making. But alhamdulilah, CAIR-Chicago not helped win a critical case for a Muslim brother, but helped changed an entire system in the process.

After a Muslim inmate complained of being denied halal food and religious headwear (kufi), CAIR-Chicago fought the Illinois Department of Corrections and the Illinois prison system on his behalf, free of charge, for many years.

Late last year, we won the case and as a result, the State must now provide our client with a proper halal diet while he is in prison. Alhamdulilah, not only did our client win, but more importantly, as a result of this action, the entire IL Prison System is changing for ALL Muslim Inmates

That's right, the State will be providing such a diet to ALL Muslim inmates in the Illinois prison system very shortly.

Additionally, as a result of the pressure put on IDOC through the lawsuit and CAIR-Chicago’s efforts, a change has been made to the State’s law regarding religious headwear, and now Muslim inmates will be able to wear a kufi at all times while in prison if they so choose.

"When we stand up together, not only can we systemize change for individuals, but we can change entire systems."
