Executive Director

Dear CAIR-Chicago Community,

As we step into the brisk winds of November where we continue to face international and domestic crisis management, I am filled with gratitude for the resilience, unity, and strength that our community is demonstrating. CAIR-Chicago remains committed to fostering an environment of understanding, justice, and camaraderi.

In the wake of recent events, we are reminded of the importance of standing together, advocating for our rights, and supporting one another. Your involvement and commitment to our mission inspire us to continue the work of promoting justice and fighting for the rights of all.

Executive Director, Ahmed Rehab, and other leaders discussed developments in Gaza and the atmosphere faced by American Muslims and Palestinian-Americans domestically in closed meetings with elected officials that included:

  • Mayor Brandon Johnson

  • Senator Dick Durbin

  • Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky

  • Cook County State Attorney Kim Foxx

CAIR-Chicago Staff - Ahmed Rehab, Maggie Slavin, Joe Milburn, and Bassam Aranout - gave community updates, ran workshops, and/or spoke at events on the crisis in Gaza and the civil rights challenges at home including at various area Mosques including:

  • Mosque Foundation

  • Orland Park Prayer Center

  • MECCA Willowbrook

  • Islamic Center of Naperville

  • Islamic Center of Wheaton

  • American Islamic Association - Frankfort

  • University of Chicago

  • St. Xavier University

  • Muslim groups in New Jersey

In addition to local masajid, CAIR-Chicago has been coordinating closely with other area organizations including:

  • CIOGC

  • Muslim Civic Coalition

  • AMP

  • IMAN


1. Rolling Meadows Know Your Rights Information Session

CAIR-Chicago is excited to partner with the Islamic Society of Northwest Suburbs for a special “Know Your Rights” information session. This event, featuring distinguished speakers Ahmed Rehab, the Executive Director and co-founder of CAIR-Chicago, and Joseph Milburn, Staff Attorney at CAIR-Chicago, aims to empower our community with essential legal knowledge.

Community Spotlight: Tarek Khalil

Advocate for Justice

Meet Tarek Khalil, an accomplished attorney and dedicated activist making a profound impact in our community. A proud alumnus of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), Tarek's journey as a change-maker is both inspiring and impactful.

Activism at its Core:

Tarek's commitment to justice took root during his time as a member of Students for Justice in Palestine at UIC. Since then, he has been unwavering in his dedication to creating positive change.

Fighting Against Injustice:

Tarek is actively involved with the Illinois Coalition Against Torture, an organization working tirelessly to end domestic police torture and shed light on global torture issues. His efforts reflect a deep-seated commitment to eradicating systematic injustices.

Defending Civil Rights:

In his role as a volunteer attorney for the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-Chicago), Tarek stands as a defender of civil rights in the Chicagoland community. Through his legal expertise, he works tirelessly to ensure the rights of individuals are upheld and protected.

Educating and Inspiring:

As a board member of the American Muslims for Palestine (AMP-Chicago), Tarek extends his impact by lecturing on vital topics such as modern Palestinian history, Middle East politics, and Palestinian rights under international law. His dedication to education and advocacy is shaping a more informed and empowered community.

Tarek Khalil exemplifies the spirit of activism and community engagement. We salute him for his tireless efforts in the pursuit of justice, civil rights, and education.

Internship Opportunity

Are you passionate about civil rights, operations, communications, outreach, or government affairs? Join our dynamic team at CAIR-Chicago and contribute to meaningful projects that make a positive impact. We're currently seeking motivated individuals for the following internship positions:

Civil Rights Law Clerk

Responsibilities:

  • Assist legal professionals in research, case preparation, and documentation.

  • Contribute to the development and execution of legal strategies.

  • Engage with clients and community members to gather relevant information

Operations Internship

Responsibilities:

  • Support day-to-day operations and administrative tasks.

  • Assist in project management and coordination.

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of organizational policies.

Communications Internship

Responsibilities:

  • Create engaging content for various communication channels.

  • Assist in managing social media accounts and campaigns.

  • Engage with diverse communities to raise awareness of our organization's mission.

Outreach Internship

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with community partners to expand outreach efforts.

  • Assist in organizing and promoting events, workshops, and initiatives.

  • Engage with diverse communities to raise awareness of our organization's mission.

Government Affairs Internship

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor legislative and policy developments.

  • Assist in preparing reports, briefings, and advocacy materials.

  • Engage with government officials and stakeholders to represent our organization's interests.

Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in a relevant undergraduate or graduate program.

  • Strong communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.

  • Passion for civil rights, social justice, and community engagement.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and/or relevant software.

In response to the ongoing crisis in Gaza and Palestine, CAIR-Chicago is proud to announce the launch of our comprehensive resource hub. We understand that individuals may face unique challenges at school, the workplace, and protests during these trying times. Our goal is to provide valuable resources and support to empower you in navigating these situations with resilience and knowledge.

  1. School Resources: Gain access to educational materials, guides, and toolkits to help students navigate conversations, promote understanding, and address potential challenges related to the Gaza and Palestine crisis within academic settings.

  • A Palestinian nurse was called slurs at the nursing home she worked at by a fellow nurse, she contacted CAIR-Chicago for assistance in dealing with this matter.

  • Three universities contacted CAIR-Chicago for Know Your Rights Trainings.

  • A Palestinian from Gaza contacted CAIR for assistance in applying for asylum.

  • A Palestinian woman who was a victim of hate speech contacted CAIR for assistance in writing a demand letter to the bigoted woman’s employer.

  • A Palestinian family had a daughter that was falsely accused of anti Semitic comments to her speech therapist. They contacted CAIR for assistance with writing a demand letter to the company.

  • A student at a university was reprimanded for pro Palestine activity at her university.

  • Two SJPs contacted CAIR regarding fears of losing their university status due to concerns that their organization condones anti Semitism.

  • A woman was harassed on the street for removing a pro Israel poster. She was then doxed and received social media harassment. She contacted CAIR for support.

  • A woman of Arab and Muslim descent had her job offer rescinded for her support of Palestine. She contacted CAIR for legal assistance.

  • Several different families have contacted CAIR regarding bullying in schools regarding the current conflict in Palestine.

  • Joseph Milburn presented a Know Your Rights Training to Orland Park Mosque.

  • Joseph Milburn presented a Know Your Rights Training to a university’s SJP.
