CAIR-Chicago Condemns Hate Crime Against 11-Year-Old Girl In North Lawndale
Chicago, IL [9/26/2023] - The Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Chicago), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, vehemently condemns the recent hate crime incident that left an 11-year-old girl severely injured in North Lawndale, Illinois. We stand in solidarity with the victim, Trinity Washington, and her family, and we demand justice for this horrific act.
Trinity Washington’s harrowing experience on September 17, 2023, outside her home on the 1900 block of South Spaulding Avenue is both distressing and unacceptable. Trinity, who was accompanied by her Yorkie puppy, was subjected to racial slurs and violence by an intoxicated individual celebrating Mexican Independence Day. Trinity was verbally assaulted. This 11-year-old girl was stuck in the eye with a bottle and punched in the nose, causing a severe injury.

We fully support the 10th Police District Elected Council in their call for the Chicago Police Department to apprehend both individuals responsible for this brutal attack. Furthermore, we join their demand for the state’s attorney to upgrade charges against the perpetrators to ensure they face the full extent of the law for this hate-fuled crime.
Additionally, we are deeply troubled to learn that Trinity’s family and the police council report threats made by the neighbor’s boyfriend involving firearm, aimed at silencing those who speak out against this injustice. Such intimidation tactics have no place in our society, and we urge law enforcement to investigate this matter thoroughly and take appropriate action to protect Trinity’s family.
Hate crimes have no place in our communities, and we call upon our fellow citizens to stand united against discrimination, bigotry, and violence. CAIR-Chicago remains dedicated to advocating for justice and equality for all, and we will continue our work to combat hate in all its forms.
CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
