ACTION ALERT: Express your opposition to the President's signing of NDAA

On December 31st, 2011, President Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) into law. The controversial bill contains provisions that allow for the indefinite detention of U.S. citizens around the world. The new provisions in the NDAA specifically authorize the military to detain U.S. citizens indefinitely without charge or trial. These provisions clearly dismiss American citizens’ civil liberties as they directly violate the 5th and 6th Amendments of the U.S. Bill of Rights.

Although President Obama has claimed to have “reservations” when signing the bill, his rhetoric has no legal standing. The bill, however, does have legal standing – and can surely endanger the lives of all U.S. citizens.

We ask you to stand in defense of the U.S. constitution and the rights of all American citizens by contacting President Obama directly and expressing your opposition to his choice in signing the bill.

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUESTED: (As always, be POLITE and RESPECTFUL.)

CAIR-Chicago is urging American Muslims and other people of conscience to contact President Obama and urge him to veto the National Defense Authorization Act (H.R.1540), which authorizes the military to arrest and indefinitely detain American citizens suspected of terrorism without charge or trial.

1. EXPRESS YOUR OPPOSITION TO THE PRESIDENT'S SIGNING OF NDAA

Call the President: 202-456-1111

Email: http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/submit-questions-and-comments

2. TALKING POINTS:

*Mr. President, I am outraged that you chose not to veto the National Defense Authorization Act as it sanctions the indefinite detention of American citizens without charge or trial.

*As a civil rights attorney, a constitutional rights professor, and our president, you should be aware of the significance of our constitutional rights and should uphold them with great value and respect.

* It is unconstitutional for the military to police or indefinitely hold American citizens without allowing them their constitutional rights to a fair and speedy trial and hearing the charges brought against them.

3. INFORM YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY by forwarding this alert to at least five other people. Tell them you took action and ask them to do the same.
