CAIR-Chicago Condemns Mass Student Visa Revocations and USCIS Weaponization of Immigration Policy
- For Immediate Release and Distribution -
(CHICAGO, IL, 4/10/2025) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Chicago) strongly condemns the Trump administration’s alarming escalation of political repression, as revealed yesterday in two shocking developments:
USCIS announced that it will now screen immigrants' social media for “antisemitic content” to determine immigration benefits—a move clearly designed to punish those speaking out against Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
Mass student visa revocations have taken place nationwide, including at the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and Southern Illinois University.

Under the guise of combating "antisemitism," the pro-genocide lobby is systemically weaponizing U.S. government agencies to silence dissent and strip away fundamental freedoms. The targeted revocation of student visas is just one tactic in a broader campaign to criminalize voices critical of Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza, following the recent disappearances of activists without due process.
Political Policing and Crackdown on Student Activism
Students at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) are facing some of the harshest legal charges in the state—felony “mob action”. UIUC authorities have also confirmed they are actively monitoring students’ social media accounts to track and justify felony charges against pro-Palestine activists—echoing the DHS directive to surveil and punish dissent.

Ahmed Rehab, CAIR-Chicago Executive Director, responds:
"USCIS sent an audacious directive essentially announcing that they will screen people’s social media to deny immigration benefits for anyone critical of Israel and its genocide. As has been the case, they brandish the cudgel of 'antisemitism.' But we have seen how 'antisemitism' is the new smokescreen by which pro-genocide operators attempt to silence not just criticism of Israel and its genocide (see: the student encampments), but also sympathies for dead, maimed, and famished Palestinian infants (see: Ms. Rachel)."
A Coordinated Crackdown on Free Speech and Activism
CAIR-Chicago is similarly deeply concerned about proposed bill HB3023 in the Illinois General Assembly for its potential for misuse in chilling freedom of speech. The National Lawyers Guild Chicago warns:
"This legislation could have a chilling effect and deter residents from engaging in protests, assemblies, or the dissemination of controversial ideas due to fear of legal repercussions."
