(CHICAGO, IL, 9/18/2024) - The Chicago Office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Chicago), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today urged the dismissal of a police detective over allegedly posting hundreds of social media posts expressing anti-Muslim, racist and bigoted sentiments.

A veteran Chicago police detective, Shawn Popow, is under investigation over posts he reportedly made expressing anti-Muslim and racist sentiments.

“Law enforcement officers pledge an oath to serve and protect all citizens,” said CAIR-Chicago Executive Director Ahmed Rehab. “If the investigation determines that this detective did in fact make those posts, we urge the department to dismiss him.”

He said that CAIR-Chicago and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
