Civil Rights and Liberties Under the PATRIOT Act: Act Now!
Sixteen provisions of the PATRIOT Act were set to expire on December 31, 2005. After a very heated debate, Congress extended the expiring provisions until February 3, 2006. Congress is now getting ready to vote on renewing the Act.

It is interesting that the editorial board chose to describe the failure of Congress to reauthorize the USA Patriot Act a “regrettable effect” of the disclosure that President Bush authorized many times spying on American citizens (“Missteps in the war on terror,” Dec. 19).
U.S. Congress to Vote on Patriot Act, Anti-Torture Legislation, & Immigration Policy
The House and Senate have resolved to finish all business on legislation by the end of this year and several critical issues of civil liberties and immigration are scheduled for review in the NEXT FEW DAYS. CAIR-Chicago is urging all community members to voice their concerns on such legislation.
ACTION: Oppose Surveillance Powers in Patriot Act
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/29/05) - CAIR is urging American Muslims and other people of conscience to continue voicing opposition to the unsupervised domestic surveillance powers contained in the USA Patriot Act. A House-Senate compromise renewing the Patriot Act was derailed just before Thanksgiving. The renewal process will be concluded within the next few weeks. Sixteen provisions of the Patriot Act are due to expire at the end of December.
ACTION: Urge Congress to Reject Patriot Act Reauthorization
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/17/2005) – CAIR today called on American Muslims and other people of conscience to contact their elected representatives and urge them to vote against the USA PATRIOT Act Reauthorization Report.
Protection from Government
Although we live in the United States, a country ruled by a Constitution and Bill of Rights which stress an individual’s freedom from government intrusion, the Sun-Times editorial board would rather we live under a repressive, meddling dictator just so that we can live in complete security, free from all threats of outside attacks (“Check prying Patriot, but don’t take all its teeth,” Oct. 13).
Shameful Display of Democracy
While our country struggles to ensure democracy grows all over the world, it seems that our politicians forget that we already have an established democracy here at home, one that holds them accountable to the American people. This responsibility is ignored when it comes to the Patriot Act, which both the House and Senate voted to renew despite its baffling objectives and provisions (“Poll: Patriot Act mystery to most,” Aug. 31).
